How much alcohol qualifies you as a Super Drunk Driver?

To stop first-offender drunk drivers in their tracks, the state of Michigan enacted “Super Drunk Driving Laws” in 2010. The stiffer laws are meant to discourage drivers from ever repeating the offense.

Some first offenders are high school or college students who may have no idea how much alcohol it takes to reach a BAC of 0.17 percent, which is the level at which the Super Drunk Driving Laws kick in.

Starting off slow

Drivers under the age of 21 are subject to arrest for driving under the influence if their BAC is 0.02 percent. A man who weighs 100 pounds could reach 0.02 if he has one drink in the space of an hour. For most people, even larger men who only have one drink, it takes about two hours for the blood alcohol concentration level to return to zero.

Gaining speed on your BAC level

To get to a BAC level of 0.15 percent and over and enter the Super Drunk Driving category, a man would have to consume seven to eight drinks, the equivalent of half a pint of whiskey. A man weighing 150 pounds could get to this level by taking those drinks over a span of two to three hours, while a 200-pound man could attain this level if he took six drinks in an hour or less.

Binge drinkers are at risk

Binge drinking, which is popular among students, would put someone at risk for Super Drunk Driver classification because by definition, this activity involves powering down several drinks in a short period of time.

The penalties

First offenders who run afoul of Michigan’s Super Drunk Driving Laws are looking at enhanced fines of up to $700, a one-year license suspension and a one-year alcohol rehabilitation program. A criminal defense attorney will tell you that a first offender might also be looking at either jail time of up to 180 days or mandatory participation in an intense alcohol treatment program.
