How is campus crime handled at Michigan State?

A large public institution of higher learning, Michigan State University is almost a city unto itself and, like all cities, has a dedicated police force.

Campus crime takes many forms, from simple traffic violations to burglaries and homicides. The Michigan State Police Department has several divisions, each of which focuses on the work of keeping students and faculty safe, following up on complaints, and assisting in major investigations. They also have a special helper in Cora, a K-9 yellow Lab who is adept at working crowds and trained to sniff out explosives on “moving targets.”

The Detective Unit

This section of the police department consists of 12 detectives with a variety of responsibilities. They perform follow-on crime scene investigations, interview suspects and witnesses, gather evidence, and work on possible related crimes.

Crime Scene Investigations

MSU highly trained crime scene investigators identify, collect, preserve and document evidence at a crime scene. They are also cross-trained in radiation, chemical and biological safety, and they have the equipment and training to handle hazardous material and investigate suspicious packages.

Computer Forensics

The Computer Forensics Unit investigates criminal activity that takes place on computers, servers, mobile phones, social networking sites and suspicious issues that turn up in all forms of digital media.

Special Victims Unit

The SVU focuses on the investigation of issues such as stalking and harassment, sex crimes, relationship violence, and child abuse. The members of this unit work closely with the victims of such crimes, ensuring to treat them with courtesy, sensitivity and professionalism.

Working together

When a college student faces either a misdemeanor or felony charge, a major concern is the question of suspension or expulsion from MSU. Once the student receives a charge of a criminal offense, legal counsel will be important ahead of any court appearance. An attorney accustomed to working with both university administrators and campus police is in an excellent position to protect the rights of the student and help avert damage to a college career already in progress.
