Stalking is on the rise at colleges including Michigan State

A university study reveals that stalking is more prevalent on college campuses than among the general populace, yet reported less often.

Michigan State University has taken steps to keep students safe. However, safety measures can backfire, and unfortunately, someone may accuse an innocent student of stalking.

Results of the university study

A study conducted by the Crime Victims’ Institute at Sam Houston State University and made available to the public in 2015 showed a disparity between stalking crimes committed on college campuses and those committed in the world beyond. Over a 12-month period, 2.2 percent of the general public experienced some sort of stalking behavior, but among college students, the number was higher at 4.3 percent. Only a quarter of the college students reported the crime, whereas 32 percent of the general population did so.

Stalking defined

Stalking is a repeated behavior directed at a specific individual to such an extent as to cause fear. It most often occurs between current or former romantic partners between the ages of 18 and 24. While a stalker may follow his or her target around campus, showing up repeatedly in various places frequented by the victim, this sort of jarring behavior does not have to take a physical form. Thanks to modern technology, stalkers can annoy and upset their targets by using the convenience of handheld electronic devices. They can show up on social media sites and on emails.

Suspension or expulsion

In addition to other penalties, stalking can lead to suspension or expulsion from MSU. Interaction may be required with administrators. There may be a formal hearing. A young person’s future is in jeopardy at this point. An attorney experienced with handling cases involving campus crimes can be a valuable advocate, working toward achieving the most positive outcome possible for a student's case.
