Childcare worker facing multiple charges of sex abuse

According to its website, the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, was founded in 1925 and since then has evolved to meet the needs of the families of those in the military and veterans of the military. Those services range from childcare for the children of veterans to residential care of children. The residential care could last from early childhood until college, with the ultimate guardianship still in the hands of the service man or woman.

Sadly, it was recently reported that a longtime employee of the Home for Children has been charged with criminal sexual conduct involving a child. She has pleaded not guilty and has been released on $15,000 bond. The Home has placed the 44-year-old woman on leave pending the investigation and outcome of the charges against her.

The sexual misconduct or abuse reportedly took place between the years of 1998 and 2006. The alleged victim would have been a minor during those years, but it was not stated whether the individual has since turned 18 and is now classified as an adult.

An investigation that began in August has resulted in another charge from a second alleged victim.

One of the issues that may arise with child sex abuse charges is the difficulty in obtaining accurate testimony. Children may not have a clear understanding of what actually constitutes inappropriate touch. The interviewing of alleged victims must be undertaken very carefully so as not to lead the child to a specific type of answer.

In this particular case, one would expect that there may not be any physical evidence or testimony other than that of the alleged victim and the accused 44-year-old woman. The incidents took place as long as 14 years ago, so memories may be faulty.

A criminal charge such as this can destroy a reputation and career as well as result in jail time. The 44-year-old is deserving of a vigorous criminal defense and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
