Independence Day Shooting

Thirty minutes prior to Lansing's Fourth of July Fireworks show, a 34 year-old Lansing woman was shot in the head at Adado Riverfront Park. The estimated 100 police officers in the park were unaware of any shots being fired; therefore, they do not believe that the gun was fired in the park and speculate that it may have been a stray bullet.

Police were approached Wednesday evening with a report of a woman having a seizure near the boat docking area. It was not until after the woman had been rushed to the hospital and evaluated that medical personnel discovered a bullet lodged in the woman's head.

The Lansing woman died from her injury Thursday.

Although it is difficult to believe that someone may have intended to kill this Lansing woman, it is possible. It may even be possible that this bullet was fired during the commission of another crime. However, it is more probable that this bullet was fired during someone's reckless behavior of discharging a weapon in celebration of Independence Day.

What many Independence Day weapon dischargers fail to recognize is the repercussion of his/her action; namely the death of this Lansing woman.

First Degree Murder is a felony punishable by life imprisonment; whether premeditated or during the commission of certain felonies.

Second Degree Murder is a felony punishable by life imprisonment or any term of years.

Manslaughter is a felony punishable by imprisonment up to 15 years, and/or a fine up to $7,500.00.

If you are facing homicide charges as a result of over celebrating the holiday, it is imperative that you retain an experienced defense attorney who can protect your interests and present a solid defense.
