Michigan State hoops star Nix facing marijuana possession charge

On the same night the NCAA men's basketball championship game was played earlier this week, Michigan State center Derrick Nix was arrested by police in East Lansing, Michigan, on marijuana possession charges. He was suspended by coach Tom Izzo several hours and now Nix's status for next season, when he was expected to be a team leader, is in doubt -- and a mark on his permanent legal record could have long-term personal consequences as well.

East Lansing police gave Nix a warning for a red light infraction in the early Tuesday, just after midnight. He was charged with two misdemeanors: marijuana possession and operating with the presence of drugs. Nix was released and will appear in court to face the charges in the coming days.

Izzo had said recently that he would be watching Nix closely during the offseason to determine if he was worthy of being a team captain for next season, when he would be the team's only scholarship senior. Judging by the coach's swift reaction by suspending Nix, he may have made up his mind already.

Even misdemeanor drug charges can have serious long-term consequences for young people. Convictions could impact the ability to travel abroad, to secure a home loan or even secure a desirable job for years to come.

Not only do Michigan State basketball fans have to contemplate the premature end of their team's season after a regional semifinal loss last month, they may now see next year's team depleted because of some allegedly criminal action.
