Health care fraud allegations brought against Michigan doctor

A Michigan doctor is facing criminal charges in relation to allegations of defrauding health care insurers, including Medicare.

The doctor is a neurologist and his practice is located in Kochville Township. Authorities claim that the man submitted billings to private insurers and Medicare for medical tests he didn't actually do. Authorities also allege that the man prescribed patients medication they didn't actually need. According to authorities, he had a rather large amount of billings to Medicare for the cancer pain drug Subsys.

Authorities claim that the doctor's alleged health care fraud involved millions of dollars.

The doctor was the target of a 2-year undercover law enforcement operation.

Recently, an arrest warrant was issued regarding the doctor and he was charged with distribution of controlled substances and health care fraud. He is currently out on bond. Included in his bond conditions are a ban on billing federally run health care programs (including Medicare) and a ban on prescribing controlled substances.

The doctor remains under investigation. The current investigation involves the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service.

Being charged with health care fraud not only can lead to severe consequences in the event of a conviction, but also can have immediate implications for a person, as can be seen from this case. Bond conditions can be put on a person that can have major impacts on them professionally. Also, a person can find themselves subject to a major federal investigation that can leave them feeling like all aspects of their life are being combed through.

Such immediate implications can leave a person feeling completely under siege and like they have no options. In such situations, having a good source of support, guidance and advice can be very important. Consequently, individuals who have been accused of health care fraud should consider promptly contacting an attorney with experience in criminal defense.
