MSU riot in East Lansing results in criminal charges

More than a thousand people flooded the streets of East Lansing shortly after midnight on Sunday to celebrate MSU's win over then-undefeated Ohio State in the conference championship game-- sending MSU to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1988. Shortly after midnight, what East Lansing police called a "large civil disturbance" broke out as reports came in of large crowds and bonfires in the Cedar Village area.

The largest bonfires were raging in the middle of River Street, where students fed couches, a mattress, and various wooden items into the flames. By sunrise Sunday, the area was largely quiet; some broken glass remained in the street as well as the charred remains from the fires. A car was overturned in a parking lot on Milford Street.

Multiple people were arrested, but no one was injured and tear gas or other chemical agents were not used to disburse the revelers. Police were in riot gear though, as they shut the disturbance down by about 3a.m. Sunday. East Lansing and MSU police were assisted by Michigan State police and the Ingham County Sheriff's office. The number of arrests and property damage estimates have not been released.

Police say they will be pressing charges against the unruly participants, and MSU President has warned of additional consequences for students. It is imperative to hire an experienced criminal defense attorney in order to protect your freedom, your record and reputation, and to avoid the harshest consequences.
