Lansing man arrested on drug, weapons charges after traffic stop

It appears that an attempt by Lansing police to execute a traffic stop led to multiple felony charges against the driver. The arresting officers claim that the man had drugs and a stolen gun in his vehicle, and that he attempted to flee the scene on foot.

The arrest took place on Dec. 3, after police pulled over a car being driven by a 28-year-old man. It is not clear how the Lansing police are justifying the traffic stop. The arresting officers’ account suggests that the suspect did not pull over immediately, but did so eventually.

However, officers say, after pulling over, the suspect got out of his car and tried to leave the scene. The officers chased him and physically subdued him. The man’s mug shot shows redness around his right eye.

The officers searched the car. They allegedly found a gun they say was stolen, as well as an unspecified amount of marijuana. They arrested the suspect on suspicion of multiple felony drug charges, weapons charges, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. He was being held on $20,000 bond as of Dec. 5.

One possible lesson from this story is that it is not a good idea to try to run from the police, who can use physical force on a suspect if they deem it necessary. However, it is also important to keep in mind that an officer must have a reasonable suspicion that someone in a moving vehicle is committing, or has just committed, a crime before he or she can legally pull over that vehicle.

Unfortunately, sometimes police do not follow the rules and arrest someone based on the results of an illegal traffic stop. When that happens, some or all of the evidence claimed by the prosecution could be thrown out of court as “fruit of the poisonous tree.” This rule is meant to curb unwanted abuses by law enforcement.
