The quest for justice from "the other side"

It is never easy to face criminal charges. Furthermore, the criminal justice system is set up in a way that makes it appear so adversarial. It seems as though it is all about winning and losing. While that may appear to be the case, in reality, prosecutors and defense attorneys should both be striving for the truth.

The good news is that recent sources indicate that police and prosecutors are actually making attempts to clear the names of those that have been mistakenly convicted of crimes. Actually, authorities have been a part of a larger percentage of exonerations from last year, according to the National Registry of Exonerations.

The National Registry of Exonerations has kept tallies of exonerations from 1989 through 2012. According to records from the database, there is a trend of assistance from police and prosecutors - especially in robbery and drug crimes.

In what ways are authorities helping? Sources report that they are facilitating the collection of post-conviction DNA. Also, there has been a nation-wide trend of creating reviewing units, which evaluate credible post-conviction innocence claims.

Innocent suspects should never have the burden of reasserting their innocence after a guilty conviction. Unfortunately, it does happen. For this reason, it is a relief to uncover assistance from "the other side," as the efforts suggest a mutual respect for truth.

If you have been charged with a serious crime, you want to ensure that you have received the assistance that you need. You have various rights and privileges under the law, which should be honored and protected. To learn more about what is at stake in your case, speak with an experienced criminal law attorney in your area.
