Routine traffic stop turns into serious drug bust

40 grams, to most people, doesn't stand as a significant measurement. Such a small amount of material rarely has much consequence in our daily lives, and yet in some situations even less of certain substances can change the lives of numerous people.

Three Michigan men are now each facing up to 32 years' prison time and a potential $65,000 fine after what began as a simple traffic stop became a police drug bust for multiple controlled substances.

Driving a rented car, the men were pulled over in I-75 in Perrysburg after making an illegal lane change just after midnight late last week. After observing "criminal indicators," officers used a drug-sniffing dog to search the vehicle, eventually finding 32 grams of cocaine, six grams of heroin, and one gram of crack cocaine inside.

The men, who hail from Harrison Township, Redford Township, and Lansing, ranged in age from 25-27-years-old and were all charged with possession and trafficking in cocaine, possession and trafficking in heroin, and possession and trafficking in crack cocaine. Michigan patrol officers estimated the combined street value of the drugs confiscated to be in excess of $5,500.

In the blink of an eye, the three Michigan men involved have come to face decades behind bars and thousands in fines, merely on account of less than 40 grams of illicit material.

For those who have been charged or implicated in a drug crime, be it possession, trafficking, or distribution, the sentencing attached to a "guilty" verdict can be quite serious. However, a criminal defense attorney versed in drug laws may be able to help secure reduced or entirely dismissed charges. With so much on the line, contacting a lawyer quickly is of the utmost importance.
