Lansing teenager faces multiple charges, including murder

In Michigan a teenager is not officially an adult until he or she turns 18 years old, as has been established by the Age of Majority Act. However in a court of law a teenager younger than 18 years old could be certified and tried as an adult. This makes a significant difference in not only the punishment that could be levied on a convicted teen, but also on some other aspects of the judicial process.

It was recently reported that a Grand Jury has indicted a 17-year-old boy on multiple charges related to the death of a 15-year-old boy from Country Club Hills. It was not stated whether or not the prosecution would seek to have the 17-year-old tried as an adult.

The murder was discovered in September when the police answered a 911 call about an unresponsive boy. The 15-year-old had gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not stated how the 17-year-old was tied to the crime, but apparently a shotgun found at the 17-year-old's residence was tied to the murder. The evidence that has been reported so far is circumstantial and so the prosecution will need to prove beyond a shadow of doubt that the firearm is tied to both the murder victim and the murder suspect.

The 17-year-old has been charged with eight counts of first-degree murder, one count of concealment of a homicide and one count of illegal possession of a rifle. He is currently being held without bond at the Cook County jail.

The seriousness of this case is a good reminder of the importance of retaining experienced legal counsel. This teenager has major charges against him and could be faced with serious jail time if he is proven guilty. He is, of course, innocent until proven guilty beyond any reasonable doubt.
