Couple of custodians charged with cooking meth in Lansing

When a meth lab makes the news, it is often in an abandoned house or some other place where there is a sense of privacy. One typically would not think of a business building in downtown Lansing. And yet, that is the allegation.

A 32-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman that were custodians in an office building have been charged with drug manufacturing of methamphetamine. The location of the meth lab was described as an office building on Townsend Street in downtown Lansing.

According to news sources, a call came in to the police that there was larceny suspected in the office building. Suspecting larceny, the police arrived at the building and allegedly found the 32-year-old and the 31-year-old in the process of drug manufacturing. The office space where the incident took place was the Insurance Institute of Michigan.

The building is a small two-story structure the sits on the corner of Townsend and West Kalamazoo. It was not reported who called in the potential larceny or what devices or chemicals were discovered that led to the meth manufacturing charge.

The 32-year-old has three previous drug offense charges, so he may be facing enhanced consequences if he is found guilty. The potential consequences for operating or maintaining a meth lab include up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $100,000.

The news report does not mention whether or not a search warrant was obtained to enter the building and the office in which the custodians were located. It also does not mention whether there was probable cause to enter the building. In this case, if there were any police procedures that were violated, there is a chance that the meth manufacturing evidence may not be allowed in court. Regardless, the couple is innocent until proven guilty beyond any reasonable doubt.

If you have been charged with drug manufacturing, it is imperative that you retain an experienced defense attorney who can protect your interests and present a solid defense.
