Second trial results in guilty verdict for former Lansing dentist

There are times when despite the best efforts of the prosecution and the defense, neither one is able to convince a jury that their viewpoint is the one to choose. When the jury is unable to come to a unanimous decision, it is said to be a hung jury. When there are several criminal charges or counts to decide upon, it can be more difficult for a jury to come to a unanimous decision. So the more charges there are, the more likely it is for a jury to be unable to reach a decision. A hung jury then requires the judge to order a mistrial, at which point the prosecution can decide whether or not to try the case a second time.

Recently a former Lansing pediatric dentist was tried for the second time. He was charged with five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and 10 counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. During his second trial the jury was able to reach a verdict. They declared the 65-year-old Lansing man guilty of the sex crimes with which he was charged.

The criminal charges stated that the former dentist had criminal sexual contact with an underage patient several times between the years 1996 and 2000. The patient was a boy who was between the ages of five and 10 when the alleged attacks occurred. The boy came forward in 2010, at which time he would have been about 19 years old. The Lansing dentist would have been about a 49-year-old when the alleged sexual assaults began. It was not stated why the young man did not report the assaults earlier.

These are serious charges. The 65-year-old dentist faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced later this month. His conviction could also place him on the national sex offender registry for life, should he ever be released from prison.

If you're facing Criminal Sexual Conduct charges, it is imperative that you retain an experienced attorney who can protect your interests and present a solid defense.
