Amid heat and music, drug charges filed at Michigan festival

The Electric Forest Festival was held at Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury. Michigan police officers stated that it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Although that is not a ringing endorsement, it does bode well for a repeat event.

The Michigan music festival drew 25,000 people for the four-day event and it also resulted in numerous arrests. The arrests and criminal charges included: 12 misdemeanor charges; one felony for resisting arrest; and 45 felony drug charges. For a music festival such as this, many of the attendees are typically from Michigan, but a great many are probably from out of state.

If you were arrested in another state -- what would you do? That is the situation that at least 58 people were facing after the holiday festival.

The heat was up to 94 degrees without factoring in the heat index. Police were out in force urging festival goers to hydrate. It was also reported that one of the festival attendees was found dead at his campsite one morning. Foul play was not suspected and an autopsy and investigation are ongoing.

According to news sources, those who were charged with drug crimes are being held in the Oceana County Jail. The types of drugs involved, and the quantities, were not reported.

If this musical festival is like many others, one of the main drugs of choice is marijuana. According to Michigan's public health code, marijuana charged as a felony for possession of five kilograms or less, can result in up to four years in jail and a fine up to $20,000.

For those out of state visitors who were charged with drug charges or other crimes, it may make sense to obtain legal representation from a Michigan attorney who is familiar with our courts, and state laws. It could make the difference between jail time and no time at all.
