Arrest follows vandalism to Lansing City Hall, state Capitol

While many people may feel upset or disenchanted with their state or local government, rarely do they take out their frustration in a physical way. Whether motivated by politics or some other factors, a person recently broke or damaged property at two locations in Lansing, Michigan: Lansing City Hall and the state Capitol.

A 26-year-old Lansing man will now need to seek a criminal defense attorney after he was arraigned on misdemeanor destruction of personal property charges. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail and a fine of $2,000 or up to three times the value of the items that were damaged.

Police were notified of a person who was allegedly damaging city property in the early morning hours last Friday. At city hall, authorities found several lights and trash cans that were damaged, but the person had left the immediate area.

He was quickly located, however, at the Capitol. The man was accused of breaking glass in a door at the top of the steps on one side of the building, of damaging another door, and of breaking several lights around the Capitol grounds. The man was arrested on the Capitol grounds.

While the man was initially charged with a misdemeanor, state police may still decide to charge him with a felony because of the location of the damage. So far, no further court dates have been scheduled for the man. In light of the threat of felony charges, it may be in his best interests to seek a plea agreement. However, that will be up to the man and his attorney to decide.
