A Warren, Michigan, man will spend several weeks in jail after pleading guilty to drunk driving and animal cruelty. The charges came about after he pulled his dog on a leash while he drove his van. The man admitted to drinking a pint of vodka before his fateful ride.

The man refused to take a preliminary breath test, but his blood was sampled later as a result of a search warrant and was found to be 0.15 percent, almost double the legal Michigan limit of .08 percent. The dog was slightly injured as a result of the incident and has since been adopted by a Warren police officer.

The driver has suffered severe penalties as a result of his arrest. The 43-year-old was sentenced to 93 days in jail, of which he received credit for 47 already served. His sentence also includes a laundry list of conditions: two years of probation with counseling (which, if unsuccessfully completed, will result in another 93 days in jail), a prohibition on drinking alcohol and taking non-prescription medication; submission to a weekly breath test; a prohibition on having pets or other animals; and payment of restitution to the veterinarian who treated the dog, as well as a donation to the ASPCA.

The man also lost his job as a result of the incident, and now that he will be unable to work, he may lose his home as well. Anyone who is accused of DUI or related crimes in Michigan may wish to contact an experienced criminal defense attorney for assistance with their case.
